CHOC Ambulatory Care Center Expands To Meet Regional Growth

The pediatric population of Orange County has grown significantly, with one out of every four residents being under 18, and over half of all children admitted to a hospital in Orange County being admitted to CHOC. In fact, within the past five years, the number of children visiting CHOC’s outpatient clinics has nearly doubled. CHOC is responding to this skyrocketing growth by expanding it’s Ambulatory Care Center, which houses CHOC’s Primary and Specialty Care Clinics. The three-phase construction and renovation of the new center began nearly 24 months ago and is scheduled to wrap up this spring. When complete, the new Ambulatory Care Center will be capable of handling more than 130,000 patient visits per year in a state-of-the-art outpatient facility.

Based on market trends and current volumes, the number of primary and specialty care visits to the CHOC campus is expected to increase to over 120,000 by 2010.

Phase I renovation of the Primary Care Clinic space was completed last spring on the first floor of the CHOC West building. The clinic now boasts 22 specialty care exam rooms and two outpatient radiology rooms. Phase II, which wrapped up last winter, included the renovation of the Primary Clinic modules and support spaces.

Phase III involves completion of the new Outpatient Infusion Center, which is scheduled to wrap up this spring. The center, which is located on the second floor of the CHOC Research building provides a space for children to receive infusions, chemotherapy and a number of other treatments. It features 22 patient care spaces including an open bay infusion center, new waiting spaces and support spaces.

With more space and equipment, the facility will reduce wait times and allow patients to receive treatment in an area with books, television, games, and other diversions—providing a comfortable environment for children and families coping with cancer.

This latest expansion is just part of CHOC’s commitment to providing care for every child in the region who is seeking care. As Southern California’s population continues to grow, CHOC will strive to keep up with the demand. Stay tuned for further expansion updates in future issues of Making a Mark.
