A Message from Phyllis Nelson
I am thrilled to deliver the message for this issue of On the Mark, as it coincides with the opening this fall of CHOC?s new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU), located on the 6th floor.
The state-of-the art intensive care unit was designed with input from CHOC physicians, Associates and parents on our Family Advisory Council. Everything from the soothing colors to the choice in fabrics involved the input of patients? families, with the concept of familycentered care and safety always in mind.
Because the 6th floor was ?shell? space, we truly had a chance to design the PICU we always envisioned; with safety, technology, and patient care at the forefront of design. All of the rooms are private, and each room features Internet access and convertible sleep/sofa beds for parents.
The new family zone, sponsored by Ronald McDonald House, is a respite area for parents to take a nap, read, shower, or fix meals in a home-like setting, enabling them to stay in the PICU as long as they need.
The new unit also features a satellite pharmacy so medications can be more quickly dispensed, and an onsite blood-gas lab for respiratory therapy. In addition, nursing alcoves are located between patient rooms, giving nurses a constant line of sight to their patients. The unit also features a visitor waiting area and information desk.
We are proud of our new intensive care unit, and grateful for the ability to create such a wonderful new facility. It is because of donors like you that we were able to build the kind of PICU that our region?s children need?and deserve. Thank you!
