Message from the Vice President
By Tanya Lieber, Vice President, CHOC Foundation for Children

If You've been by the main CHOC campus in Orange lately, you may have noticed that there?s a lot of construction going on. That?s because we?re growing?and preparing to meet the needs of an ever-expanding pediatric population.

Did you know that based on market trends and current volumes, the number of primary and specialty care visits to the CHOC campus in Orange is anticipated to increase to more than 120,000 by 2010? That?s a very large number to accommodate, especially when we?re already pressed for space in facilities built years ago for a much smaller population.

To prepare for this expected growth, we are renovating our on-site clinic space to consolidate primary and specialty care services (currently split in five areas around the campus) into a single area?doubling the size of the current primary clinic space. The three-phase project will last approximately 24 months, with final completion scheduled for May 2008.

This summer, construction crews are scheduled to wrap up Phase I, the renovation of the specialty clinics on the first floor of the CHOC West building. When finished, the area will feature 31 new exam rooms, two outpatient radiology rooms and two dental chairs.

Phase II construction will remodel the existing clinic modules and support spaces to make way for the new primary clinic space. When complete, the new 28,000-squarefoot space will include 77 exam rooms, a large waiting room, a separate adolescent waiting room, educational areas, X-ray rooms and family spaces.

In addition to the remodeled clinic space, we?ll also be adding a new 22-bed outpatient infusion and procedure unit. This unit will provide a dedicated facility for children receiving chemotherapy, antibiotics and other infusions as well as outpatient procedures such as bone marrow aspirations and sedated hearing tests.

We are excited about the growth and changes going on at our campus and encourage you to stop by and visit our new facilities once they?re complete. As always, we are grateful for the support of our donors?they help us keep leading-edge care for our community?s children close to home.
