Families in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach now have a place to turn for medical help when their children's physician offices are closed. UrgiKids, the only pediatric, after-hour, urgent care clinic in the Newport-Mesa area, opened Saturday, January 3, 2004. Hours of operation are Monday-Friday, 6-9 p.m., and Saturday, Sunday and holidays, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. UrgiKids is located in the Hoag Health Center, 1190 Baker Street, Suite 100, in Costa Mesa. The phone number is (714) 668-2540.
Staffed by pediatricians and nurse practitioners, UrgiKids treats children, ages newborn to 18, for a variety of illnesses including high fevers, asthma and other respiratory problems, sinusitis, ear infection, pneumonia, as well as a host of other illnesses and discomforts that can strike after hours and on weekends. Traumatic injuries should be directed to the nearest emergency room.
"We're delighted to open a quality, pediatric-only, after-hour urgent care clinic that provides much needed care, comfort and peace of mind to local families," says Dr. Andrew Blumberg, medical director. "Most of the area's pediatricians will be referring their patients who can't wait until the morning to get this convenient service."
In addition to working closely with local pediatricians, UrgiKids is connected to the area's only pediatric specialty hospitals – Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) in Orange and CHOC at Mission in Mission Viejo, and Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach. For additional support for families, CHOC offers an automated Parent Advice Line at (714) 289-4500 for immediate health information. Online, pediatric health information can be found on the CHOC website at www.choc.org.
"As a dedicated pediatric hospital, CHOC understands the value of quality, after-hour care provided by physicians specializing in the unique needs of children," says Teresa Conk, vice president of business development for CHOC. "We are glad to offer our expertise and support in continuing to meet the healthcare needs of our community’s children."
