CHOC CHILDREN’S COMPREHENSIVE EPILEPSY PROGRAM EARNS NATIONAL RECOGNITION AS LEVEL 4 CENTER
April 09, 2012

The CHOC Children’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Program recently achieved recognition by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) as a Level 4 epilepsy center.  Level 4 epilepsy centers are recognized for having the professional expertise and facilities to provide the highest level of medical and surgical evaluation and treatment for patients with complex epilepsy.  CHOC is the only free-standing children’s hospital in California to be named a Level 4 epilepsy center.

Under the direction of pediatric epileptologist Mary Zupanc, M.D., CHOC’s Level 4 Comprehensive Epilepsy Center provides the most complex forms of intensive neuro-diagnostics monitoring, as well as extensive medical, neuropsychological and psychosocial treatments.  As a Level 4 center, CHOC also offers a complete evaluation for epilepsy surgery, including intracranial electrodes and other more complex surgical procedures.

“CHOC is proud to receive the most prestigious recognition available to epilepsy centers nationwide.  This distinction represents our commitment to our patients and their families, and to being the regional leader in pediatric epilepsy care,” states Dr. Zupanc.

Prior to joining CHOC last year, Dr. Zupanc built comprehensive pediatric epilepsy programs at Mayo Clinic, Columbia University, the NYU School of Medicine and, most recently, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.  She’s published more than 35 peer-reviewed scientific papers.  Her team at CHOC consists of clinical and support staff specially trained in the care of children with neurological disorders.  This includes board-certified epileptologists, neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuropsychologists, neuroradiologists, social workers, physical therapists, dieticians, nurse practitioners, nurses, child life specialists and case managers.

About CHOC Children's: Named one of the best children’s hospitals by U.S. News & World Report (2014-2015) and a 2013 Leapfrog Top Hospital, CHOC Children's is exclusively committed to the health and well-being of children through clinical expertise, advocacy, outreach and research that brings advanced treatment to pediatric patients. CHOC earned the Gold Level CAPE Award from the California Council of Excellence, the only children’s hospital in California to ever earn this distinction, and was awarded Magnet designation, the highest honor bestowed to hospitals for nursing excellence.  Recognized for extraordinary commitment to high-quality critical care standards, CHOC’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is the first in the United States to earn the Pediatric Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence.
