CHOC CHILDREN'S RECEIVES $1,040,000 GRANT FROM BLUE SHIELD OF CALIFORNIA
November 21, 2011

CHOC Children’s was recently awarded with a $1,040,000 grant from Blue Shield of California to support CHOC’s efforts to become an accountable care organization (ACO).  CHOC was one of only 18 hospitals, health systems, clinics and physician groups – many serving underserved populations - in the state to be awarded the grant.

A key provision in the new health law, ACOs are arrangements between providers and payors creating clinical and financial integration.  ACOs are intended to foster greater efficiency and quality in the delivery of care.

Blue Shield’s ACO grants are being made as part of the non-profit health plan’s two percent pledge to limit annual net income to two percent of revenue and to return the difference collected above that amount to customers and to the community.  The grants represent an average of $10 million for each of the two fiscal years (2010 and 2011) that the pledge has been applied.

CHOC will utilize the grant to support its mission of providing care to underserved children in Orange County.  The funds will be used to enhance case management, health education, nutrition and social services.
