Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) has been ranked by CHILD Magazine as one of America's best children's hospitals -- the only hospital in California to make the Top 25 list. The exclusive survey, which was developed by a team of prestigious medical advisors from across the nation and based on hard data rather than subjective opinions, calculated results according to survival rates, quality of staff, nurse-to-patient ratios and patient/family comforts, including a Child Life Department. The survey also covered safety issues such as avoidance of medical errors.

"CHOC is honored to be named among the top tier of children's hospitals in the nation," commented Kimberly Chavalas Cripe, president and chief executive officer of CHOC. "This wonderful recognition is truly a credit to CHOC's dedicated team of physicians, nurses, researchers and Associates, and their unwavering commitment to protect the health and well-being of our patients."

According to CHILD magazine, their extensive, nine-month investigation started with the 100 full-member hospitals that belong to the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions. The field was then narrowed to 54 by determining evaluation scores from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, an independent agency that subjects institutions to a rigorous three-day examination of their treatment protocols, record-keeping, dispensing of medication and dozens of other crucial areas.

The 50 finalists were then sent a rigorous 72-question survey developed by CHILD magazine's medical advisory board, which reviewed and evaluated the survey results. The details are published in the February issue of CHILD Magazine. The survey results are also posted on the magazine's website located at www.child.com. .
