Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) has just been awarded “Magnet recognition” for nursing excellence by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).  CHOC now joins an elite group of hospitals nationwide – including only 24 children’s hospitals in the country – that has achieved this distinction.

“I am pleased to see that the ANCC is recognizing what our patients, their families, fellow medical professionals and our staff have known for a long time -- that CHOC demonstrates a tireless commitment to the highest standards of nursing practice, quality of care and patient safety.  Our staff’s clinical expertise is combined with unwavering compassion for the children we serve,” said CHOC President and CEO Kimberly Cripe.

The ANCC developed the Magnet Recognition Program® to honor healthcare organizations that demonstrate excellence in nursing practice and adherence to national standards for the organization and delivery of nursing services.  Since its development, the program has been recognized by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations for its role in raising standards of nursing practice and acting as a positive force in quality of care and patient safety.

The program is entirely voluntary, and a hospital aspiring to Magnet status must meet 164 sources of evidence and undergo intense scrutiny of every aspect of the hospital’s nursing staff, procedures and patient interactions.  The entire process can take a hospital up to three years, or more, to complete.  Magnet hospitals must also be reevaluated every four years in order to retain the designation.

Research has suggested that there are clear benefits to hospitals that are awarded Magnet status and to the communities they serve:
• Healthcare consumers have more confidence in the overall quality of a hospital if it has achieved the level of excellence established by the ANCC
• Magnet hospitals consistently outperform other facilities in recruiting and retaining nurses, resulting in increased stability in patient care and patient satisfaction
• Magnet hospitals – demonstrating a commitment to quality nursing – attract the highest caliber of physicians and specialists, for which CHOC is already known.
“CHOC’s Magnet designation truly demonstrates our organization’s commitment to quality, evidence-based care, patient safety, and service excellence.  CHOC nurses are leaders in their field and have long embraced the goal of advancing their practice through research, education and participation in local, state and national professional organizations.  They are most worthy of this high honor,” said Cripe.

Named one of the best children’s hospitals by U.S. News & World Report (2014-2015) and a 2013 Leapfrog Top Hospital for the highest quality of care, Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC Children's) is exclusively committed to the health and well-being of children through clinical expertise, advocacy, outreach, education and research that brings advanced treatment to pediatric patients. Affiliated with the University of California, Irvine, CHOC’s regional health care network includes two state-of-the-art hospitals in Orange and Mission Viejo, many primary and specialty care clinics, a pediatric residency program, and four clinical centers of excellence - the CHOC Children’s Heart, Neuroscience, Orthopaedic and Hyundai Cancer Institutes..

CHOC earned the Gold Level CAPE Award from the California Council of Excellence, the only children’s hospital in California to ever earn this distinction, and was awarded Magnet designation, the highest honor bestowed to hospitals for nursing excellence.  Recognized for extraordinary commitment to high-quality critical care standards, CHOC’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is the first in the United States to earn the Beacon Award for Pediatric Critical Care Excellence.
