CHOC AT MISSION CELEBRATES CONSTRUCTION OF NEW EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT PEDIATRIC WING
April 25, 2005

On the evening of April 5, more than 200 supporters joined together at Mission Hospital to celebrate the completion of Phase 1 of the hospital’s Emergency Department and Trauma Center Expansion: the new dedicated pediatric area – a collaboration between Mission Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) at Mission. The construction of the pediatric area of the Emergency Department was made possible through the generosity of supporters from both CHOC and Mission Hospital. Mission Hospital’s major donors include: Tom and Pamela Bender (San Juan Capistrano); The Buccola Family (Dana Point); Henry L. Guenther Foundation (Los Angeles); The Nolet Family of Nolet Spirits U.SA. (Aliso Viejo); O’Connell Family Foundation Trust (San Juan Capistrano); Rancho Mission Viejo (San Juan Capistrano); and Young’s Market Company (Aliso Viejo). That evening, CHOC recognized the following key contributors: The John and Tracey Duden Family (Coto de Caza); The Jeff and Suzy Elghanayan Family (Laguna Beach); Jake and Marie Griffith in memory of Grandpa Agbisit (San Juan Capistrano); Fariborz Maseeh and The Massiah Foundation (Newport Beach); The Wolfe Family (Coto de Caza); and CHOC’s Queen of Hearts Guild, Tres Osos Guild and Tinkerbell Guild. The evening’s program featured presentations by Mission Hospital President and Chief Executive Officer Peter Bastone; CHOC President and Chief Executive Officer Kimberly Chavalas Cripe; and Medical Director of Emergency Services Robert Winokur, M.D. The soon-to-open Emergency Department pediatric area – also containing a “Fast Track” element – will serve more than 25,000 patients annually, and includes 11 private exam rooms and a dedicated waiting room, apart from adult patients. The new area is specially designed to help ease children’s anxieties, with brightly painted walls and floors, and child-friendly furnishings. “Children’s Hospital of Orange County is proud to be an integral part of this important expansion, which no doubt, will enhance the physical and emotional well-being of the children we serve, requiring emergency services,” said Kimberly Chavalas Cripe.

Named one of the best children’s hospitals by U.S. News & World Report (2014-2015) and a 2013 Leapfrog Top Hospital for the highest quality of care, Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC Children's) is exclusively committed to the health and well-being of children through clinical expertise, advocacy, outreach, education and research that brings advanced treatment to pediatric patients. Affiliated with the University of California, Irvine, CHOC’s regional health care network includes two state-of-the-art hospitals in Orange and Mission Viejo, many primary and specialty care clinics, a pediatric residency program, and four clinical centers of excellence - the CHOC Children’s Heart, Neuroscience, Orthopaedic and Hyundai Cancer Institutes..

CHOC earned the Gold Level CAPE Award from the California Council of Excellence, the only children’s hospital in California to ever earn this distinction, and was awarded Magnet designation, the highest honor bestowed to hospitals for nursing excellence.  Recognized for extraordinary commitment to high-quality critical care standards, CHOC’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is the first in the United States to earn the Beacon Award for Pediatric Critical Care Excellence.
