Where did the Lamp Lighter Guild Name Originate?

Have you heard of Robert Louis Stevenson? He was a Scottish poet and novelist who spent most of his life suffering from the debilitating complications of tuberculosis.

In the poem, “The Lamplighter,” Stevenson reflects on one of his boyhood dreams of becoming a lamplighter. Each evening he would watch the lamplighter make his way up and down the street near his home, lighting the street lamps one by one.

Stevenson watched as the lamplighter climbed his ladder at each lamp post, then leaving a glow behind that pierced the darkness. Stevenson experienced a thrill every evening that the lamplighter passed his door, for he always paused to give him a wave and a friendly smile.

The lamplighter gave Stevenson hope during a difficult time with a life-threatening illness. The Lamp Lighter Guild strives to help children at CHOC by lighting the way with hope for a healthy and bright future.
