CHOC Cancer Institute Awarded Approval with Commendation from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons

The Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) Cancer Institute was awarded full approval with commendation by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons. CHOC is the only children’s hospital in the state, and one of only 11 pediatric cancer programs in the nation to receive CoC approval.

The new, 6000-square-foot facility, which also includes a recreation therapy area, a dedicated child life specialist, and televisions, DVD players and PlayStations at each infusion station to encourage the healing power of play, provides a dedicated center for pediatric patients to receive infusions and procedures without having to be admitted to the hospital.

This advancement comes less than one year after the Institute of Medicine released a report calling for all prescriptions to be written electronically by 2010 to improve patient safety.
