Surgical Services
Surgery may be included in a pediatric cancer treatment “roadmap.” Patients at the Hyundai Cancer Institute at CHOC Children's have direct access to a full-range of surgical specialties including urology, gynecology, orthopedic, and thoracic. We also offer neurosurgery and the latest reconstructive and limb salvage services.
All surgical services are child- and adolescent-centered, with surgeons and nurses specially trained to operate on children of all ages—from newborn babies to young adults. Surgery can involve removing the tumor or taking some tissue for a biopsy. It is often used in conjunction with chemotherapy and/or radiation to help remove as much of the cancer as possible.
We are pleased to be able to provide our patients access to some of the most skilled and knowledgeable surgeons in the country at CHOC's very own Tidwell Procedure Center. Our pediatric oncology surgeons specialize in minimally invasive surgeries using the very latest thoracoscopic, laparoscopic, neurosurgical, orthopedic and robotics methods available.

Did you know?
- CHOC Children’s has one of the largest pediatric surgical robotics programs in the world.
- Our surgeons have renowned expertise in limb preservation and salvage. In fact, our surgeons are among a handful of skilled physicians in the country who provide pediatric patients with incredible options for limb salvage or replacement that include using human nerves, muscles, arteries and bones to replace lost tissue due to tumor removal. When it is not possible to use human tissue, our surgeons can often use prostesis that can grow with the child.
- At CHOC, we have pediatric surgeons who specialize in gynecology and urology.
