Need Help Consenting to Medical Care?

Family Legal Assistance at CHOC is a nonprofit that works with CHOC to support families who need help with medical consent issues. We are a team of compassionate lawyers who understand that it is difficult enough to have a child going through medical treatment, and it can be even more difficult when treatment is stalled due to issues around receiving proper consent. We aim to remove this burden that so many families feel and serve our clients with empathetic and timely representation.

Sheniece Smith, Attorney“We understand how important this service is to families trying to access health care and how overwhelming the process can feel. We are pleased to be able to provide this resource as one of the many ways CHOC strives to make all aspects of healthcare easier for patients and families.” – Sheniece Smith, Attorney

We provide full-service legal representation to families who are not able to consent their child’s health care needs, such as:

  • Caregivers who are caring for a child who is not their biological daughter or son,
  • Parents of a young adult who is over 18 and the young adult is not able to consent to his or her own medical care.

Our lawyers are here to walk families through some of the complicated legal issues they can face when their children are receiving treatment. We file forms with the court, coordinate with county agencies, and attend court hearings to make sure that everything goes smoothly.

We work with families who reside in the following counties: Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Los Angeles. If you feel that you may need our services, please reach out to your social worker.

Amanda Thyden, Attorney“We approach each case with compassion and care. Our goal is to resolve legal matters as quickly as we can so that families can focus on the health and well-being of their children.” – Amanda Thyden, Attorney

Families who meet certain guidelines will receive free representation.
