LANCE'S STORY

It's been more than 20 years since Lance and Linda Friesz's son, Lance, was in the CHOC Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), but they will never forget the experience. Linda says, "That time in the hospital was very traumatic for our family, but we were reassured by the knowledge that our son was in the very best of hands."

Lance - the Friesz's first born, was a full-term delivery, but suffered from meconium aspiration, chemical pneumonia and a collapsed lung. Immediately after he was delivered, he was transferred to CHOC, where the NICU team saved his life. Doctors worried about the long-term damage to Lance's lungs, but this former CHOC patient showed no signs of weakness and just recently signed with the LA Galaxy, a professional soccer team. He's the team's new goalie. While he'll be working hard to prevent opposing teams from scoring, this NICU graduate certainly scored the biggest goal of all - and CHOC couldn't be more proud!
