The goals of the second year include the continuation of developing skills of history taking and examination, as well as procedural skills. PL-2 residents also explore some of the subspecialties in required rotations and electives. A major priority in the second year is the development of teaching and leadership skills.

During this year, the resident must learn how to lead a team on the inpatient service, evaluate the performance of the interns and medical students, and assist them in overcoming areas of difficulty. In order to be an effective teacher and physician, the PL-2 resident must continue their medical education by reading, lecturing and teaching.
