The current national trend toward primary and preventive care
has reinforced interest in pediatrics. CHOC has responded
to this increased focus on primary care by enlarging our commitment
to training in ambulatory settings. The program provides 50%
of training in outpatient sites, both here at the main CHOC
facility and at closely allied sites in the community.
The residency program at CHOC has received the
maximum 5 year accreditation offered by the Accreditation
Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The requirements
of the ACGME and the American Board of Pediatrics are such
that most pediatric residencies share many programmatic features.
Residencies, however, are certainly not all the same. The
residency experience provides the opportunity to develop clinical
confidence and establish a fund of knowledge, with residents
gaining clinical experience and increasing responsibility
throughout their 3 years of training. Independence of thought
and the critical evaluation of the literature are encouraged.
The goal of our program is to sharpen resident observation
skills, while refining and reinforcing ethical values.
We encourage residents to get involved in the
American Academy of Pediatrics, and become advocates for children
at all levels. Your training years should also incorporate
an introduction to the fundamentals of managed care, and the
changing pattern of medical economics. You, your fellow residents,
and your patients will individualize the nature and quality
of your experience.
This web site contains an outline of the
CHOC Pediatric Residency Program. Written descriptions and
photographs cannot altogether convey the quality and diversity
of the clinical experience available at CHOC. We encourage
you to visit and speak with residents and physicians who have
trained at CHOC, to see our hospital, to appreciate our nursing
staff, the excellence of our ancillary services and personnel,
and the teaching capabilities of the medical staff. At CHOC,
we are able to provide an environment in which your development
will be fostered while you acquire the skills you need to
pursue a career in pediatrics with excellence.
