Call is every 4th night, in-house, for Inpatient (IP) and Intensive Care (PICU and NICU) rotations. Urgent care call (UC), taken while on some outpatient rotations, is from 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm on weekdays, and from 4:00 pm – 10:00 pm on the weekends. Residents have urgent care call for 8 weeks in their intern year and for 4 weeks in their 2nd and 3rd years while on ambulatory General Pediatric Clinic rotations.

Another type of "call" within the curriculum is Backup call (BU). Residents are required to be available by pager within a 1-hour drive from the hospital to cover in case another resident is ill or additional help is required for patient care. There is an average of 6 residents on BU call per rotation. Residents will be called only to cover rotations that they have experienced (for example, a PL-1 resident will not be asked to cover in the PICU). When a backup call is covered for someone else, the same number of hours of call will be repaid to the resident at another time.

In the second and third years, residents have one call-free rotation. The call-free rotation is useful for scheduling electives for those applying for fellowships, those interested in international electives, and those interested in away electives at other institutions.

Senior and Intern Float duties are discussed above.
