Grateful Mother Makes a Diference at CHOC

Having a child in the hospital is a frightening experience to Alissa Ford. Two years ago, Alissa’s daughter Emma was born 10 weeks early and weighed just over 2 pounds. Then, at 6 days old, she was diagnosed with a quadruple heart defect.

Alissa spent many hours visiting her daughter in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at CHOC, where Emma spent the first 300 days of her life. When Emma was 5 months old, CHOC cardiac specialists successfully performed a complicated open heart surgery to correct her multiple heart defects.

At the time, Alissa had no idea that her experience with the hospital would guide her to her true calling. When the position of Parent Service Coordinator at CHOC at Mission needed to be filled, it didn’t take the hospital staff long to call on the one person they thought would be great at it–Alissa.Alissa now fills this vital role at CHOC at Mission, lending support to parents with children in the hospital; and she is making quite an impact. “She makes you feel a little bit more connected to a situation that is difficult to accept,” says Ann Henstridge, former NICU mom.During the time her daughter was recovering, Alissa thought there had to be a purpose for what she was going through. She now realizes exactly what that purpose is—to give back to the hospital that gave so much to her family.
