CHOC Patient Chosen to be Hyundai's National Pediatric Cancer Youth Ambassador

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Hyundai Motor America and its dealers’ commitment to supporting the fight against pediatric cancer. To commemorate this milestone, Hyundai conducted a nationwide search and selected 10-year-old CHOC patient Sammy Heim to be its national Youth Ambassador. She will represent the spirit of Hope on Wheels and encourage other pediatric cancer patients and their families.

Sammy has been in remission since August 2007 after battling rhabdomyosarcoma, the most common soft tissue tumor found in children. As the National Youth Ambassador for the 2008 Hyundai Hope on Wheels™ Tour, Sammy’s indomitable spirit embodies the mission of Hope on Wheels.

According to Sammy, “I don’t want other innocent kids to have to go through what I did. If we didn’t help raise money for cancer research, a lot of kids would have died because they wouldn’t know what it was or how to cure it,” she said. “I want to help raise money for cancer research, too.”

In July, Hyundai and its dealers donated $50,000 to CHOC during a Hope on Wheels “Handprint Ceremony.” The ceremony, at which Sammy Heim served as the key-note speaker, celebrates pediatric cancer patients’ lives and treatment milestones by capturing their colorful handprints on a white 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe vehicle.

The donation will support the research efforts of Dr. Samuel Esparza, a member of CHOC’s pediatric oncology team.

“Hyundai and its dealers are proud to make this donation to a hospital and doctor that have shown such dedication to the fight against pediatric cancer,” said Oscar Leeser, president of the Hyundai National Hope on Wheels Dealer Board, and El Paso, TX Hyundai dealer. “In its efforts to promote the training of the next generation of doctors, The Hope on Wheels Tour honors the brave children who have faced this disease and shares their hope and positive outlook with families across the country.”
