CHOC Children's Annual Report
Everyone in Orange County is somehow connected to CHOC Children’s. If it’s not your own children that have been treated by our team of pediatric experts, chances are you know a few that have. Among friends, neighbors, coworkers, even people we encounter in our daily travels—CHOC is a common bond we all share. In this report, you will learn about some of our finest moments.

Robotic IV Automation Improves Safety and Efficiency

A key feature of the very best children’s hospitals is the availability of programs and services that cannot be found anywhere else in the region—like our four specialized CHOC Institutes or the Breathmobile asthma and allergy unit or our in-house “Radio Lollipop” station. But soon, one of CHOC’s most vital services will be unique beyond Orange County.

This fall, CHOC will be the first facility in the world to implement the Robotic IV Automation (RIVA) in its pharmacy. This state-of-the-art, self-contained unit will automatically and accurately prepare IV syringes and bags in patient-specific doses, virtually eliminating human involvement in mixture and preparation processes.

Not only will RIVA place CHOC’s pharmacy at the cutting-edge of technology, it will greatly enhance patient and pharmacy employee safety, improve the efficiency of the pharmacy while reducing waste and assist in meeting the challenges of changing regulatory environments. RIVA will allow pharmacists to customize medication doses and prepare them “on demand” rather than following the normal standard of batching by hand. Electronic order entry and full automation of repetitive and complex tasks will guarantee accuracy and consistency while reducing the risk of error and contamination. And because RIVA will reduce the amount of manpower needed in the pharmacy, more of CHOC’s pharmacists will be able to assist clinicians on the hospital floors, increasing service and satisfaction to both medical staff and CHOC patient families. CHOC is already receiving wide attention from other hospitals that are interested in RIVA and are seeking more information on its capabilities. CHOC is truly setting the standard for high technology in the pharmacy environment. But Rita Jew, executive director of pharmacy at CHOC, doesn’t want to stop there.

“We see huge potential with RIVA and know this is an outstanding investment for CHOC,” says Rita. “Our next goal will be to secure funding for a second machine that could prepare chemotherapy drugs for our cancer patients. We are going to keep dreaming big because we see so many benefits for our hospital and our patients in this exciting endeavor.”
