CHOC Children's at Mission: South County's Dedicated Pediatric Healthcare Center

Celebrating its 16th anniversary this year, CHOC Children’s at Mission Hospital is the only dedicated pediatric healthcare facility for families living in South Orange and North San Diego counties. Housed on the 5th floor of Mission Hospital, the 48-bed “hospital-within-a-hospital” sees about 2,400 patients each year, with 84 percent coming from South County.

In 2008, CHOC at Mission was honored by ADVANCE for Nurses magazine for having one of the nation’s five best nursing teams.

According to Marcia Folli, vice president and chief nursing officer at CHOC at Mission, “for nearly 16 years, CHOC at Mission has continued to develop and advance. We’ve added clinical programs and services, pioneered surgical innovations and garnered awards for nursing excellence.”

“People may not be aware that in addition to the standard pediatric care offerings at CHOC at Mission, we also have our own dedicated Emergency Department (ED) and our own pediatric operating pavilion,” Marcia explains. “The ED is located in a pediatric wing of Mission Hospital’s Emergency Department; it separates our young patients from critically ill or injured adults. The Swenson Pediatric Operating Pavilion includes play areas, six surgical pre- and post-operative recovery rooms and a child-friendly waiting area.”

The operating pavilion also features the latest in minimally invasive surgical technology—the da Vinci Surgical System, which enables surgeons to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures using a state-of-the-art robotic platform.

In addition, CHOC at Mission recently added around-the-clock neurology services to its medical offerings, meaning patients no longer need to be transported to CHOC in Orange to receive expert neurological care.

In 2008, CHOC at Mission was honored by ADVANCE for Nurses magazine for having one of the nation’s five best nursing teams. The team was recognized for creating and implementing an online clinical documentation program—including the development of an electronic medical record—with an emphasis on enhancing patient safety.

According to Marcia, “the team’s success demonstrates our commitment to innovative technologies that elevate quality of care. Our online clinical documentation system puts best practice guidelines, decision support tools and other safety checks at the caregivers’ fingertips, taking patient care to the next level.”

Another major focus at CHOC at Mission is family-centered care, which involves patients and their parents or caregivers in all aspects of treatment and recovery.

“Whether a child is admitted to CHOC at Mission to be treated for influenza, a head trauma or for life-saving surgery; innovative, family-centered care is at the heart of everything we do,” Marcia concludes. “Our care teams help children and their families get back to what’s important: enjoying life—together.”
