Board Member Spotlight: Jerry Flannery

“It’s all about the kids.” As a member of the CHOC Children’s Foundation board of directors, that’s how Jerry Flannery sums up his and Hyundai Motor America’s involvement with CHOC Children’s. Jerry is executive vice president, general counsel and secretary of Hyundai Motor America and Hyundai Motor Finance Company. According to Jerry, “for the past 10 years, Hyundai has been committed to supporting the fight against pediatric cancer. And, we are firmly dedicated to supporting the CHOC Children’s Cancer Institute.”

“I am a cancer survivor myself, and my father passed away from cancer at a young age,” Jerry continues, “so I am personally invested in this initiative.”

In 2007 Hyundai launched its Scholars Pediatric Cancer Fellowship Program at CHOC with a gift of $150,000 to support the research of Dr. Leonard Sender, medical director of the CHOC Cancer Institute. In 2008, Hyundai awarded an additional $50,000 to CHOC oncologist Dr. Samuel Esparza to aid his research in the incidence of leukemia in the Hispanic population.

In addition, Sammy Heim, a former CHOC patient and success story, is Hyundai’s national spokes kid/youth ambassador for Hope on Wheels. Sammy visited seven hospitals in 2008 and appears on several hundred thousand brochure pieces to promote the story of hope for children and families involved with cancer.

“Our dealers are also very much behind this cause, and our employees fully support the fight against pediatric cancer,” Jerry explains. “Every one of our product brochures since 2007—approximately 9 million—has a section on Hope on Wheels and Hyundai’s endeavor to help fight pediatric cancer. And, a portion of the proceeds from every car sale goes to help children with cancer.”

“Through Hope on Wheels and my affiliation with the CHOC Children’s Foundation board of directors, Hyundai is improving the lives of children and helping make strides in finding a cure for pediatric cancer. To us, it really is all about the kids.”
