Tom and Marilyn Braly Support CHOC Oncology Program

When Tom Braly’s long drive to a San Diego hospital for chronic lymphatic leukemia treatment became too tedious, he was referred to Dr. Leonard Sender, who in addition to treating young cancer patients at Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) treats adult patients at UCI Medical Center.

Tom was immediately impressed by Dr. Sender’s knowledge and passion, and over time, became a personal friend. When Dr. Sender invited Tom and his wife, Marilyn, for a tour of the oncology unit at CHOC, they were even more impressed as Dr. Sender shared with them his exciting plans to develop the Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) cancer program at CHOC.

Tom and Marilyn later surprised Dr. Sender with a gift of $100,000 to support CHOC’s oncology program and have continued their generosity with two more gifts totaling $65,000 for the AYA program.

According to Tom, “I am fortunate to have been successful in business, and I had reached a point in my life where I wanted to give back. We learned that Dr. Sender has a very special place in his heart for pediatric cancer patients—and that there are too many of them. We were especially interested to learn that there is a gap in cancer care for adolescents, and that Dr. Sender wanted to create a program at CHOC to help them.”

“When we took a tour at CHOC, we were struck with a tangible way we could help children with cancer and express our gratitude for the care that I received,” Tom continues. “We decided to direct our giving to the Adolescent and Young Adult oncology program at CHOC, which provides a dedicated area for adolescents on the oncology floor.”

According to Dr. Sender, “Tom and Marilyn’s commitment to CHOC’s oncology program has been a tremendous gift. Their support has helped us to create a dedicated adolescent wing on the oncology floor at CHOC. I am deeply grateful for their generosity and friendship.”
