Cox Communications, Tandberg, Med-RT Solutions team up to make CHOC Patient?s wish a reality

When a high school senior was hospitalized at CHOC last spring, he had a wish: to be able to watch his high school graduation that he was unable to attend.

The patient was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML), a life-threatening illness that he thought he had kicked in 2004. Three years later, the cancer returned, requiring him to undergo a second bone marrow transplant and a hospital stay of four to six months.

In a combined effort, Cox Communications, Tandberg, Med-RT and the Information Systems team at CHOC made the patient’s wish a reality. The team was able to run Internet to the school’s football field hosting the graduation and position a high definition video conferencing device enabling him to observe the live graduation ceremony.

With a remote control, the patient was able to zoom in on his friends and around the event. He also was able to hear supportive messages from his fellow classmates and teachers, all from the comfort of his bedside. The next day, Charles Salter, Aliso Niguel High School’s principal, presented the patient with his diploma.

Ralph Frid, senior program manager at Cox Communications, recalls, “when we got the call from CHOC, we were pleased to participate because it’s work like this that makes a difference in everyone’s lives. I knew this was something we could make happen; joining together with Tandberg and Med-RT, I knew we could combine our technology to make the patient’s wish a reality.”

Igor Erceg, sales engineer at Tandberg, agrees. “Coming together to make it possible for the patient to watch his high school graduation was an amazing experience. The feeling we all got from teaming up to make someone’s wish come true was immensely gratifying. I’m just so glad we were able to help.”

“It was inspiring to see so many people come together to make this happen,” says Tim Hoolihan, vice president of business development at Med-RT. “It really meant a lot to be a part of something so rewarding.”
