ECMO Pioneers Return To CHOC
Thirty years after performing the world’s first successful extra corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) procedure, pioneering pediatric cardiac surgeons Robert H. Bartlett, M.D., and Alan Gazzaniga, M.D., were reunited at the grand opening of the CHOC PICU/CVICU. The event also provided the opportunity for these special guests to observe some of the latest developments. CHOC ECMO services have recently expanded to include Extra Corporeal Life Support and the use of ventricular assist devices (VAD). “VAD provides better support for certain forms of heart disease, including myocarditis and cardiomyopathy, and may also be used for longer periods of time,” says John Cleary, M.D., associate medical director of the CVICU. “Patients awaiting heart transplants may be transported while on the VAD.”
