New Outpatient Infusion Unit Opens Thanks to Generosity of The Dhont Family Foundation

The new Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) Outpatient Infusion Unit is set to open this spring, thanks in part to a $1 million gift from The Dhont Family Foundation. The 6,500-square-foot center will enable children who need ongoing outpatient care to receive treatment in a pleasant environment filled with books and video games, rather than having to be admitted to a hospital room each time they need care.

Andre Dhont, who oversees the foundation his parents started in 1998, said his parents wanted to make sure their money went to help children and the community.

“They received so much from the community, and their wish was to make sure we took care of the community in return,” Dhont says. “This is exactly where they would want to help.”

Research has shown that treating children on an outpatient basis, whenever possible, can promote faster recovery times and enhanced well being.

Nearly 70 percent of the children who will benefit from this unit are cancer patients who will receive treatments, such as chemotherapy, on an outpatient basis and avoid overnight hospital stays. Other patients will utilize the unit for a wide range of procedures that have previously required hospitalizations.

“My parents would be happy to know that children who would otherwise have been admitted to the hospital will be able to receive treatments on an outpatient basis. And, they’ll be surrounded by books and toys in a child-friendly environment, hopefully making their visit a little bit easier,” Dhont says.

According to CHOC president and CEO Kim Cripe, “CHOC is incredibly grateful for the generous support of The Dhont Family Foundation. Their $1 million gift has enabled us to continue to expand our outpatient services; it will help children in Southern California for years to come.”

The Dhont Family Foundation was founded on a true “American Dream,” and a pure commitment to give back to the community. Andre and Eveline Dhont came to the United States almost half of a century ago from Belgium. They were fortunate and persistent to realize their dream through years of hard work. Today, their dream continues through the legacy they established with The Dhont Family Foundation to help countless Orange County children.
