CHOC Cardiac Cath Lab Goes Digital

CHOC recently completed a leading-edge digital upgrade of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab. This improvement offers greatly enhanced image resolution with potentially fewer side effects and less radiation, and positions CHOC for future advances in cardiac catheterization techniques.

“The last 10 years have brought significant new technology to cardiac catheterization procedures. The equipment is smaller and can be rotated more easily, making it possible to obtain more dedicated views of the heart,” says Farhouch Berdjis, M.D., Medical Director of the CHOC Cardiac Catheterization Lab. In addition to the more technologically enhanced cardiac catheterization tools, the system’s biplane, flat-panel screen provides greater image resolution than older CRT systems.

CHOC TO OBTAIN MUSCULAR VSD DEVICE
CHOC will be one of the first hospitals on the West Coast to obtain a muscular ventricular septal defect (VSD) device, pending FDA approval later this year. Offering a less-invasive way to close muscular VSD than conventional surgery, the device is similar to the atrial septal defect (ASD) device CHOC obtained five years ago.

Dr. Berdjis, who received training for the new muscular VSD device in Europe, says more exciting new cardiac catheterization devices are on the horizon.

“CHOC has invested in the future by building this lab and providing the infrastructure that interventional cardiologists need. In order to utilize this new equipment to the fullest extent, we need cutting-edge technology in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab,” Dr. Berdjis says. “I am happy that CHOC is supporting this development because it gives us the tools to push the envelope further.”
