New Orthopaedic Surgeon to Direct Sports Medicine Program at CHOC

An internationally recognized, fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon with an emphasis in sports medicine has joined the CHOC medical staff. Steven W. Meier, M.D., will lead the development of a sports medicine program at CHOC and CHOC at Mission. This state-of-the-art program will offer leading-edge sports medicine to address the growing number of young athletes in Orange County. Services will include the evaluation and treatment of athletic sports injuries unique to children, including ACL injuries with open growth plates, little league elbow, shoulder instability and patella-femoral disorders.

“Our vision is to provide state-of-the-art care for pediatric and adolescent athletes, whose needs are often very distinct from their adult counterparts,” Dr. Meier says. “By combining the skills and talents of specialists in numerous fields, including athletic trainers, primary care medicine, rehabilitative medicine, orthopaedics, neurology, pulmonology, neurosurgery and cardiology, we will have a unique and unified system that can provide integrated, comprehensive care for the athlete, no matter what the issues are.”

While many orthopaedic injuries may be addressed with rehabilitation alone, some types respond best to definitive surgical repair, he says. The sports medicine program will employ the most progressive and cutting-edge, minimally invasive techniques to ensure the best results and the fastest recovery possible.

Dr. Meier is actively engaged in basic science research to find ways of improving current success rates of arthroscopic shoulder repairs for instability and rotator cuff disorders. He is also involved with the development of injury prevention programs in the community to help throwing athletes and swimmers avoid disabling shoulder and elbow problems, and soccer players avoid ACL knee injures.

Dr. Meier will serve as a team physician and consultant to local high school athletic teams. He also will hold a faculty appointment at the University of California, Irvine, and participate in orthopaedic resident training.

Meet Steve W. Meier, M.D.

Board-certified in orthopaedic surgery, Dr. Meier is a graduate of the Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine, and served his residency training at Northwestern University, both in Chicago. He completed a sports medicine fellowship at the University of California, in San Diego, where he also was a clinical instructor.

Dr. Meier’s areas of specialty include:

  • Arthroscopic repair of rotator cuff injuries and shoulder instability
  • Reconstructive cartilage and knee ligament surgery
  • State-of-the-art, minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques for treating shoulder, elbow, hip, knee and ankle problems

The developer of several innovative surgical techniques, Dr. Meier’s research has been published in orthopaedic specialty journals and textbooks. He has presented his work and taught advanced arthroscopic surgical techniques to orthopaedic surgeons in Europe, Asia, South America and Africa.
