CHOC Oncology Adds Adolescent Wing

The CHOC Cancer Institute is adding a new $2.5 million, six-bed wing to the existing oncology unit to better accommodate the needs of adolescents with cancer. The CHOC Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Program provides leading-edge treatment for adolescents ages 15 and older. The new wing will continue to provide patients age-appropriate, disease-appropriate treatment within an environment that stresses improved outcomes and enhanced quality of life.

Adolescents and young adults are usually diagnosed with different types of cancer than adults, yet many adolescents are treated at centers focusing on the malignancies of older adulthood. Research has shown that using aggressive, pediatric protocols may improve long-term survival by as much as 30 percent.

"If you see a young person with cancer, send them to a focused center like ours," says Leonard Sender, M.D., Medical Director of The CHOC Cancer Institute. "Don't kill a kid with kindness by giving him a less intensive regimen. We want to go for the cure." The program also features a strong psychosocial component to help patients address concerns about college, career, marriage and children.

The CHOC Cancer Institute is one of the few hospitals in the country offering an AYA program. Similar programs may be found at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, in Houston, and the Harvard-affiliated Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, in Boston.
