CHOC Aiming For National Prestige
A Message from Administration

In May, CHOC was one of only five California children's hospitals to receive the "Excellence in Patient Safety and Health Care Quality Award" presented by Aetna, Blue Shield of California, CIGNA HealthCare of California and United Healthcare. This first-ever award was based on results of the Leapfrog Hospital Quality and Safety Survey. Out of the 216 participating California hospitals, CHOC was one of 22 hospitals recognized for being in the top 10 percent.

We are very proud to be recognized for our patient safety, as it demonstrates that CHOC is already among the best hospitals. Still, we are setting our sights higher.

CHOC is planning to submit an application to the Malcolm Baldridge Quality Award. This award is the highest level of recognition for performance excellence that an American organization may receive. The award's board of examiners includes leading experts selected from industry, professional and trade organizations, education, health care organizations and government. These examiners assess each applicant's entire organization: leadership, strategic planning, financial performance, patient satisfaction, quality, human resources and process issues.

No one at CHOC is more familiar with this process than Executive Director of Quality Beth Rowett, M.A., M.H.A., C.P.H.Q. She has served on the board of examiners for the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award several times, and was recently appointed to the 2006 board as a senior examiner. Since joining our team a little over a year ago, Rowett has been putting systems in place to help CHOC prepare for this undertaking.

Joining her in these efforts is James Cappon, M.D., our new Medical Director of Patient Safety and Quality, who has served as the CHOC Patient Safety Officer since 2001. Dr. Cappon has been an active participant in the development of our computerized physician-order entry process and electronic medical records.

In his new role, Dr. Cappon is partnering with the medical staff to drive clinical excellence across the entire CHOC organization. Additionally, he has already initiated collaborative studies with other children's hospitals. One of these studies focuses on the development of a PICU-specific trigger tool to aid in more efficient and comprehensive identification of adverse drug events in the PICU setting.

Many organizations use the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality assessment tool as a framework for excellence. They submit applications every year and use the feedback for continual improvement.

CHOC, too, will be using these objectives to assess and measure our strategic planning and performance. It will give us clearer insights into how well we are achieving our goal of being one of the premier children's hospitals in the nation.
