CHOC Heart Program Positioned To Become Regional Powerhouse

Earlier this year, CHOC welcomed Anthony C. Chang, M.D., as the new medical director of The CHOC Heart Institute. An internationally recognized authority in pediatric cardiac medicine, Dr. Chang has worked at three of the leading pediatric heart programs in the nation - Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Boston Children's Hospital and, recently, Texas Children's Hospital.

Dr. Chang has ambitious plans for The CHOC Heart Institute and considers its relatively smaller size to be an advantage. He leads daily rounding in the CHOC Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) that includes a multidisciplinary team of cardiologists, neonatologists, intensivists, nurse practitioners, nurses, pharmacists and respiratory therapists.

Dr. Chang adds that the unit's smaller size increases flexibility, making the CHOC CVICU more open and responsive to new ideas in the delivery of cardiac care. He anticipates The CHOC Heart Institute will serve as an alpha test site for new equipment, including ultrasound and near-infrared monitoring devices.

AN EMPHASIS ON EDUCATION, COLLABORATION

The CHOC Heart Institute sponsored Pediatric Cardiology Review 2006, a one-week pediatric cardiology course. Held in Miami, the presenting faculty included specialists from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Columbus Children's Hospital, UCLA, Yale University School of Medicine, Texas Children's Hospital and The Hospital for Sick Children, in Toronto.

The course was attended by more than 200 physicians from 25 different countries. Dr. Chang anticipates the next program to draw as many as 300 to 500 participants.

This November, The CHOC Heart Institute is sponsoring the Second International Conference on Heart Failure in Children and Young Adults.

Dr. Chang also anticipates stronger working collaborations much closer to home.

"We're exploring a regional restructuring of pediatric heart centers. We'd like to develop Southern California into a regional powerhouse for pediatric cardiac care that the rest of the country will notice," he says.

In addition to his medical training, Dr. Chang has a Master of Business Administration in healthcare administration from the University of Miami School of Business. He says that his background in administration and finance is essential to his new role at CHOC.
