CHOC, PADRE and Hoag Hospital Foundation Collaborate to Bring Pediatric Endocrinology Services to Costa Mesa Clinic

Concerned about the rising incidence of obesity and Type II diabetes within the local community, the Hoag Hospital Foundation has partnered with the CHOC Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes, and the PADRE Foundation to reverse this trend.

The first phase of this program is currently underway at the CHOC Primary Care Clinic in Costa Mesa. CHOC pediatric endocrinologist Jody Krantz, M.D., is conducting a monthly clinic for Type I and Type II diabetes at the clinic in order to make these services more accessible to the community. Dr. Krantz is providing these services with the assistance of a CHOC registered nurse educator and a dietitian.

In addition to patient care, CHOC and the PADRE Foundation have developed a community-based, culturally sensitive program for children and families in the Newport - Mesa Unified School District area to promote healthy living, and to prevent obesity and diabetes. PADRE (Pediatric Adolescent Diabetes Research and Education) is a non-profit organization providing education and support for children with diabetes and their families.

The CHOC Primary Care Clinic in Costa Mesa opened in July 2004. The 4,000-square-foot clinic has six exam rooms and ample office space for the clinic's bilingual support staff, which includes a community educator, outreach social worker, care coordinator and certified application assistor to help families obtain health insurance.

"Many of the uninsured children we see have working parents. We have staff designated to help them find health insurance and navigate the system," says Bonnie Heri, R.N., who manages the CHOC clinics in Costa Mesa and Garden Grove. "We are building links with community groups and faith-based organizations through outreach services. We also offer flexible hours to accommodate working parents and provide transportation to specialty services or the hospital to make sure these children receive the care they need."

Located at 136 Broadway, the CHOC Primary Care Clinic in Costa Mesa is open weekdays and Saturdays with evening hours on Thursdays. For more information, please call 949-722-9100.
