CHOC Collaborates with Healthy Smiles For Kids of Orange County and Garden Grove Boys & Girls Club

CHOC, Healthy Smiles For Kids of Orange County and the Garden Grove Boys & Girls Club have collaborated to bring medical, dental and family counseling services all under one roof. The first program of its kind in Orange County, the Children's Health and Dental Center opened doors in September on the campus of the Garden Grove Boys & Girls Club. The $4.5 million center is housed within a two-story, 13,500-square-foot building that includes eight medical exam rooms and seven dental exam rooms.

The CHOC Clinic, located on the first floor, logged 125 visits during the first full month of operation. That number doubled the following month. Also located on the first floor is the ARCHES program provided by the Garden Grove Boys & Girls Club. ARCHES (Access to Resources, Counseling, Health, Education and Support) offers child counseling and family services, including WIC, homework assistance, parenting classes and family literacy programs.

In January, pediatric dental services became available upstairs through a collaboration with Healthy Smiles For Kids of Orange County. Partially funded by the Children and Families Commission of Orange County and private corporate support, Healthy Smiles is working with community pediatricians, pediatric dentists and educational institutions to bring dental treatment, education and preventive care to the medically underserved community.

A recent study reported that more than half of the children entering Orange County elementary schools have unmet needs concerning oral health. CHOC pediatric dentist Richard Mungo, D.D.S., medical director of Healthy Smiles For Kids of Orange County, is specifically targeting the 0 - 5 age group. One of leading pediatric dentists in the area, Dr. Mungo says that education will be a high priority, just as important as the dental treatment that will be offered. An educational program will be provided for general dentists, pediatricians and other health care professionals so that they can recognize and evaluate children's oral health problems and when indicated, make the appropriate referrals.

The Children's Health & Dental Center is located at 10602 Chapman Avenue in Garden Grove. Hours vary. For more information, please call 714-532-7900.
