Physician Spotlight: Barbara Petty, M.D.

Dr. Petty has been integrally involved with CHOC at Mission from the very beginning.

From 1993 to 1994, the year CHOC at Mission opened, she served as chief of staff for Mission Hospital. A few years later, she became chief of staff at CHOC at Mission. She just completed her term as past chief of staff at CHOC at Mission in December.

Barbara Petty, M.D., still serves on the board of directors for CHOC at Mission, and is currently president of Kids Doc, the after-hours pediatric urgent care with offices in Mission Viejo and Rancho Santa Margarita, located adjacent to the hospital. But she says it is her interests outside of medicine that keep her life in balance and provide perspective. She urges all doctors to develop interests outside of their practices.

"It expands your view of the world. I think it makes you a better doctor to have other things in life besides your practice that give you satisfaction and happiness," she says.

Not surprisingly, Dr. Petty has a myriad of personal interests. First, there's her family. With seven grandchildren, five of whom live locally, she enjoys spending as much time as possible with them. She also dabbles in woodwork, stenciling and is currently taking a stained-glass art class.

20 YEARS OF HOSPITAL SERVICE, PRIVATE PRACTICE

Dr. Petty joined the Mission Hospital staff in 1983, shortly after completing her pediatric internship and residency at UCI. Immediately, she became involved with that hospital's pediatric executive committee.

After 20 years of private practice, Dr. Petty now has a sizable adolescent population. Her interests within general pediatrics include asthma management and ADHD. She particularly enjoys taking time to educate her patients' parents about the causes of certain diseases or conditions and about behavioral issues. She sees herself as a partner in caring.

"I tell parents that they want kids who will want to kick back at their house. That as parents they need to be willing to sit with their kids and talk, and just be there for them," she says. "It is really rewarding to see patients go from being little kids to responsible, and hopefully, happy, successful adults."

Dr. Petty credits her husband, adult and adolescent psychiatrist Stephen Petty, M.D., for supporting her many professional and personal interests. She says it helps that he "speaks the same language."

"The long hours, and the missed dinners and weekends. I think it is always important to recognize the place of your partner in your life," she says."Without a partner's backing and support, this job would be a lot harder."

Barbara Petty, M.D., is in private practice at 27800 Medical Center Road, Suite 350, in Mission Viejo. To contact her, please call 949-364-2510.
