News from the CHOC Cancer Institute
The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons has granted approval to the CHOC Cancer Institute. Established by the American College of Surgeons in 1932, the approvals program sets standards for cancer programs and reviews the programs to make sure they conform to those standards. Approval is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to provide the best in diagnosis and treatment of cancer and to undergo a rigorous evaluation process and a review of its performance.
Pediatric oncologist Steven Neudorf, M.D., clinical director of the CHOC Blood and Marrow Transplant Program, was first author on a study published in the May 15, 2004 issue of BLOOD. According to the study, pediatric patients with acute myelocytic leukemia (AML) can experience a graft-versus-leukemia (GvL) effect that improves survival. The results of the study and an interview with Dr. Neudorf were also featured in the July 2004 issue of Hem/Onc today.
