CHOC Receives NIH Grant
To Train Stem Cell Researchers
The CHOC Research Institute is one of only five institutions in the country to receive a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to train researchers throughout the world on how to grow and maintain human embryonic stem cells. The training course will utilize one of the human embryonic stem cell lines approved for use in federally sponsored research. CHOC scientist, Philip Schwartz, Ph.D., principal investigator for the grant, is developing this training course in conjunction with Evan Snyder, M.D., Ph.D., program director and professor of Stem Cells and Regeneration at The Burnham Institute. The training course will be held on the Burnham campus in La Jolla, California, this April. This is a terrific opportunity for the CHOC Research Institute to partner with The Burnham Institute, recognized by the Institute for Scientific Information as one of the top 15 organizations worldwide for scientific impact in the field of biomedical research.
The goal of the NIH grant is to make the best use of federally approved human embryonic stem cell resources by training researchers to grow and expand the cells that hold tremendous promise for revolutionizing treatment for a variety of devastating disorders including Parkinson's disease and type I diabetes. The CHOC Research Institute has already received more than 100 formal inquiries about this course.
