CHOC Opens Neuroscience Unit, Cardiovascular ICU

Children's Hospital of Orange County has opened two brand-new units providing specialized care for neuroscience patients and for the postoperative needs of cardiac surgery patients.

To accommodate the expanded services provided through The CHOC Neuroscience Institute, 24 beds on 5 West have been designated as the Neuroscience Unit (NSU). Staffed with on-site CHOC neurologists, the unit offers 1:4 and 1:3 nurse/patient staffing, depending on acuity. The NSU provides a full range of services, from video EEG and video telemetry monitoring for patients with seizures, to post-operative care for neurosurgery or trauma patients. Additionally, the highly experienced staff is qualified to care for patients with the following needs:

  • Baclofen pumps
  • Ketogenic diets
  • Vagal nerve stimulation
  • Ventriculostomies

"CHOC's excellent neurologists and neurosurgeons have made it possible to provide state-of-the-art neuroscience procedures for our patients and, accordingly, our patient population has grown," says Nancy Souza, R.N., M.A., clinical director of the Neuroscience Unit. "We also have a dedicated nursing, electrodiagnostic, occupational and physical therapy, case management and dietary staff who have received education in neuroscience and are passionate about caring for these patients." Development of a family resource center providing Internet access is also underway.

For more information about the NSU, please contact The CHOC Neuroscience Institute at 800-329-2900.

As The CHOC Heart Institute continues to expand its programs under the direction of new Medical Director Mark Bleiweis, M.D., 12 beds of the PICU have been designated as the Cardiovascular ICU in order to provide highly specialized post-operative care for patients undergoing such technically complex surgeries as the Ross and multi-step Norwood procedures, as well as surgical intervention for hypoplastic left heart syndrome and Tetralogy of Fallot.

Staffed with experienced nurses who have received advanced cardiac surgery preceptorship training, the Cardiovascular ICU offers a 2:1 nurse/patient staffing ratio for patients during the first hour after surgery. The ratio shifts to 1:1 until the patient is extubated and stable. Otherwise, a 1:2 nurse/patient staffing ratio is provided.

The Cardiovascular ICU is supported by a multidisciplinary team of pediatric-trained cardiac surgeons, pediatric intensivists, pediatric cardiologists and pediatric anesthesiologists, many of whom trained at the nation?s leading pediatric heart centers.
