CHILDREN’S ASTHMA CHRONIC LUNG DISEASE CENTER OPENS
January 26, 2004

The Asthma Chronic Lung Disease Center is a collaborative effort between Children’s Hospital of Orange County and the University Children’s Hospital at UCI Medical Center. It is funded by a $1 million grant from the Children & Families Commission of Orange County. Affecting approximately 10 percent of all children, asthma is the most common chronic disease accounting for pediatric hospitalization, with 80 percent of children developing the chronic lung condition by the age of 5. Without early treatment and intervention, asthma may lead to permanent obstruction of a child’s airway. Children ages 0-5 will be treated at the center, which will focus on medical care, education and research.

The CHOC/UCI Asthma Chronic Lung Disease Center combines the clinical expertise and research capabilities of both hospitals. This collaborative, complementary program provides differential diagnosis for wheezing to confirm or rule out asthma and other lung diseases, including cystic fibrosis, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, inhaled foreign body, recurrent aspiration and airway abnormalities.

To help avoid recurrent emergency room visits or hospitalization, the Center evaluates medications for efficacy and appropriate use. “In addition to ensuring the best possible care for children, our goal is to reduce emergency room and hospital visits due to asthma and chronic lung problems,” said Dr. Dan M. Cooper, medical director of the center and professor of pediatrics at UCI. “We hope to start seeing children as soon as they are diagnosed, so we can begin interventional treatments and teach parents how to care for a child with asthma and other chronic lung problems.”

Dr. Bruce Nickerson, medical director of the CHOC Pulmonary Center, will also oversee the Asthma Chronic Lung Disease Center. “This is the only program of its kind in Orange County. This Center provides the most comprehensive approach to treating pediatric lung disease, with a strong emphasis on early intervention and prevention, ongoing maintenance and monitoring of clinical outcomes.”

Named one of the best children’s hospitals by U.S. News & World Report (2014-2015) and a 2013 Leapfrog Top Hospital for the highest quality of care, Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC Children's) is exclusively committed to the health and well-being of children through clinical expertise, advocacy, outreach, education and research that brings advanced treatment to pediatric patients. Affiliated with the University of California, Irvine, CHOC’s regional health care network includes two state-of-the-art hospitals in Orange and Mission Viejo, many primary and specialty care clinics, a pediatric residency program, and four clinical centers of excellence - the CHOC Children’s Heart, Neuroscience, Orthopaedic and Hyundai Cancer Institutes..
