INTERNATIONAL EXPERTS RECOGNIZE CHOC CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL FOR IMPROVING MEDICATION SAFETY
April 11, 2012

CHOC Children’s Hospital reduced potential serious drug events by 40 percent through its IV infusion pump improvement work, and was recently awarded Honorable Mention in the 2012 RACE for Results award program.  This honor is given by the Children’s Hospital Association for exceptional clinical and business improvements in children’s hospitals nationwide. CHOC is the only children’s hospital on the West Coast to achieve the recognition this year.

CHOC received Honorable Mention for its efforts to support complex smart pump technology. Smart pumps are IV infusion pumps that help nurses administer high-risk medications to children correctly. To maximize the benefits of smart pumps and decrease IV medication administration errors, CHOC implemented a mandatory re-education for all nursing staff, began a vigilant monitoring process to ensure appropriate technology use and continuous data evaluation, and initiated a radical medication label redesign.  The project was particularly commended for its efforts to reduce so-called nuisance alerts, thereby minimizing “alert fatigue” which is one of the human factors contributing to error across all industries.

Four other children’s hospitals received honors for their improvement work: Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (Cincinnati, OH) “The Journey to High Reliability: Quality Transformation Leads to Improved Patient Outcomes”; Arkansas Children’s Hospital (Little Rock, AR)
“Red Bag Waste Reduction Team”; Nationwide Children’s Hospital (Columbus, Ohio)
“A Journey to Eliminate Preventable Harm and an Associated Decrease in Hospital Mortality”; and Children’s Mercy Hospital and Clinics (Kansas City, Missouri) “Project Clinic Access”.
