Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) is pleased to announce the opening of the Dhont Family Foundation Outpatient Infusion Center (OPI), located on the second floor of the CHOC Ambulatory Care Center on the hospital’s Orange campus, and featuring 20 outpatient infusion stations, including two isolation rooms, and two procedure rooms.  The new, 6000-square-foot facility, which also includes a recreation therapy area, a dedicated child life specialist, and televisions, DVD players and PlayStations at each infusion station to encourage the healing power of play, provides a dedicated center for pediatric patients to receive infusions and procedures without having to be admitted to the hospital.

Nearly 70 percent of the children who will benefit from the OPI are cancer patients who will receive treatments, such as chemotherapy, on an outpatient basis and avoid overnight hospital stays.  Other patients will utilize the facility for a range of procedures that have previously required hospitalizations.

Melanie Patterson, BHS, MHA, RN, Director of The CHOC Cancer Institute, says, “Research has shown that treating children on an outpatient basis, whenever possible, can promote faster recovery times and enhanced well-being.  CHOC is very pleased to be able to add this incredible center to our growing campus as part of our passionate pursuit to provide the safest, most advanced care for children.”

The OPI is named in honor of the Dhont Family Foundation for a generous $1 million gift.  Additional donations for the Center came from the O.L. Halsell Foundation and the McBeth Foundation.

CHOC was fortunate to receive support from a number of dear friends and donors at the VIP opening of the Dhont Family Foundation Outpatient Infusion Center. Among attendees, including hospital executives and board members, were Denis Lesenne, Robert Topp and Andre Dhont, board members of the Dhont Family Foundation, which generously donated $ 1 million to name the Outpatient Infusion Center.

Assembly member Michael Duvall (72nd District) also stopped by to acknowledge this latest CHOC achievement. And, Zafar Brooks, Director, Government Affairs and Community Development for Hyundai Motor Company enjoyed the evening. Guests enjoyed hearing from CHOC oncology patients Sammy Heim and Cheyenne Broswell.
