Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) has been recognized with a third place win in the Child Health Corporation of America’s (CHCA) RACE for Results Award Program.  The program annually recognizes outstanding performance improvement achievements at children’s hospitals across the United States. CHOC earned the RACE for Results distinction for its success in improving clinical outcomes of extremely low birth weight infants (infants with birth weight < 1000 grams) in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) through early standardized nutritional intervention.

Nutritional care of the NICU patient is an essential part of daily care that impacts every organ system, as well as the patient’s development and recovery.  CHOC’s NICU team successfully implemented processes, including the development of feeding guidelines based on birth weight, which resulted in a standardized, consistent approach to providing nutrition for infants.  Consequently, CHOC’s tiniest patients are demonstrating improved growth and reduced potential for complications frequently associated with the premature infant.

The RACE for Results honor is an addition to a range of recent accomplishments for CHOC. As Orange County’s pediatric healthcare leader, CHOC is currently growing to better serve the needs of the community’s children and families, including the new 30-bed Pediatric/Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (PICU), current expansion of the Ambulatory Care Center, continuous implementation of new technology, and innovative patient and safety initiatives, which have prompted CHOC’s inclusion on the Leapfrog “Top Hospital’s 2007” list and the recent distinction of a Bronze Level CAPE (California Awards for Performance Excellence) Award Winner from the California Council for Excellence.
