Barnes & Noble Booksellers, in Orange County, is hosting the Eighth Annual "Prescriptions for Reading" Book Drive to benefit Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC). During the month of July, Barnes & Noble Booksellers' patrons can purchase titles from a CHOC wish list, available in the stores, or favorite titles from the stores' children's departments to be donated to CHOC's literacy program. At the end of the book drive, Barnes & Noble Booksellers will top off patrons' donations with 500 additional books.
Affiliated with Reach Out & Read, CHOC's literacy program consists of modeling reading by volunteers who bring books into the clinic waiting rooms, training pediatricians in specific literacy strategies to promote books, and giving each child a developmentally appropriate book to take home at each visit. Children grow up with at least a few interesting books at home, and every parent hears about the importance of looking at books with young children.
As health care workers, CHOC pediatricians know first-hand how poor reading skills impact the lives of their patients. Many parents of patients cannot read medication prescriptions, instructions for the care of illness or injury, nutrition guidelines and other materials essential to the well being of their children.
