Orange County today received its first, fully equipped mobile asthma treatment unit, the CHOC Breathmobile, funded by The California Endowment. Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) will operate the unit in conjunction with the Orange County School Asthma Program. The Breathmobile, trademarked by the Southern California Chapter of the Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), will provide services five days per week to 22 under-served schools and sites throughout Orange County. Staffed with a bilingual nurse, physician and driver, the CHOC Breathmobile will provide the following services: asthma and allergy evaluations, including health histories, physical exams, breathing tests and skin tests; standard and ongoing asthma and allergy treatment, including medications and home peak flow monitoring; education and training for children, families, schools, nurses and physicians on asthma management; referral to county and community resources; and assistance in providing a treatment site for families. “Asthma is an under-diagnosed and potentially deadly disease, which affects at least 10 percent of school children in the area and across the nation,” sys Dr Stanley Galant, founder of the Orange County School Asthma Program and director of the CHOC Breathmobile. “The reality is that many underserved children are at risk because their families often can’t afford check-ups or medication. Under the circumstances, we have decided to bring doctors and treatment into the community free of charge. “Our efforts are expected to impact quality of life for the child and family by decreasing school absences and missed work days, increasing exercise tolerance, and reducing emergency room use and hospitalizations, as related to asthma,” adds Dr. Galant. In addition to AAFA, which obtained the grant from The California Endowment to support the program and purchase the Breathmobile, the program has received support from the HealthCare Foundation for Orange County, Kaiser Permanente, Latino Health Access, the pharmaceutical industry and other private donors. “We are delighted about the Breathmobile going to Orange County,” said Francene Lifson, executive director of AAFA So Cal, whose Breathmobiles serve schools in the Los Angeles and Montebello Unified School districts as well as areas of Phoenix, Chicago and Baltimore. “The response to the Breathmobiles has been overwhelming, and our goal is to eventually bring them to children in under-served areas across the country.” For more information about the CHOC Breathmobile, please call 714-532-7571.
