CHOC BREATHMOBILE AWARDED $500,000 FROM SOUTH COAST AIR QUALITY MANAGEMENT DISTRICT

The Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) Breathmobile®, a fully equipped mobile asthma treatment unit, was awarded a $500,000 grant from the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD). The CHOC Breathmobile® will use the money to expand asthma treatment and education services in Orange County, with a goal of significantly improving the health and well-being of children with asthma.

Grant funding comes from a major air pollution settlement reached last year between the AQMD and BP West Coast Products LLP.

“Air pollution exacerbates asthma symptoms,” said Jim Silva, AQMD Board Member and Orange County Supervisor. “The Breathmobile project resulting from this air pollution settlement will directly benefit asthma sufferers in Orange County.”

The Breathmobile® model, developed by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, was launched in Orange County in 2002 in partnership with CHOC and multiple community agencies. The program delivers specialty care to 20 school and community sites, bringing a comprehensive range of asthma screening, treatment and education to an average of 200 school children each month. Since 2002, more than 1,600 school-aged and preschool children have been served.
