SAFE KIDS ORANGE COUNTY COALITION & CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL OF ORANGE COUNTY OFFER CAR SEAT INSPECTIONS AIMED AT IMPROVING 100 PERCENT MISUSE RATE
May 10, 2006

WHAT: In recognition of Emergency Medical Services Week, designed to publicize safety, and to improve the misuse rate for car seat installation, Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) and the Safe Kids Orange County Coalition will provide car seat inspections by certified child passenger safety technicians. Technicians will train parents and caregivers in the proper installation and setup of their own specific car seats in their vehicles. Certified technicians will also educate parents/caregivers on the California Child Passenger Safety Law. Spanish-speaking technicians will be available. The inspection is free and by appointment only. WHEN: Monday, May 15th, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. WHERE: Angel Stadium of Anaheim,(Parking Lot A), 2000 Gene Autry Way, Anaheim, CA WHY: Motor vehicle crashes are the leading killer of children 14 and under. Infants and children in motor vehicles must be secured in age-and size-appropriate car seats until they are 8 years old and close to 5’ tall. Additionally, children must be secured in an appropriate child passenger restraint (safety seat or booster seat) in the back seat of the vehicle until they are at least 6 years old or weigh at least 60 pounds. In a crash, inappropriately restrained children are nearly 3.5 times more likely to be seriously injured than children in correctly adjusted restraints. CHOC and the Safe Kids Orange County Coalition conduct routine car seat check-ups and have seen 100 percent misuse in car seat installations.
