VONS FOUNDATION PRESENTS A $10,000 CHECK TO CHOC’S BREATHMOBILE
November 15, 2005

The Vons Foundation, a division of Safeway, presented a $10,000 check today at their Tustin Ave. location to Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) and the CHOC Breathmobile program, a mobile asthma clinic serving inner-city school children of Orange County. The Breathmobile van and staff were on hand to give tours of the vehicle, which is the only one of its kind in Orange County. “This gift of $10,000 will help CHOC continue to reach out to Orange County’s children by providing important asthma education and treatment to approximately 20 school sites on a monthly basis,” explains Kathy Kolodge, executive director of primary care services at CHOC. This is the second $10,000 grant to CHOC from the Vons Foundation, but the first to support the care of childhood asthma. Vons Foundation Board Member, Wendy Lycett, suffers from asthma and was an advocate in directing the funds to CHOC’s Breathmobile program. In 2004, a $10,000 grant went to support one of CHOC’s Healthy Tomorrows vans, a fully equipped medical van that provides medical care and other services to sites within the community on a rotating basis. Vons has a “Good Neighbor Policy” to support their communities at a local and personal level. Annually, the company and its employees raise millions of dollars for various charities. Through the Vons Foundation, employees are allowed to earmark funds for specific charities.

Named one of the best children’s hospitals by U.S. News & World Report (2014-2015) and a 2013 Leapfrog Top Hospital for the highest quality of care, Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC Children's) is exclusively committed to the health and well-being of children through clinical expertise, advocacy, outreach, education and research that brings advanced treatment to pediatric patients. Affiliated with the University of California, Irvine, CHOC’s regional health care network includes two state-of-the-art hospitals in Orange and Mission Viejo, many primary and specialty care clinics, a pediatric residency program, and four clinical centers of excellence - the CHOC Children’s Heart, Neuroscience, Orthopaedic and Hyundai Cancer Institutes..

CHOC earned the Gold Level CAPE Award from the California Council of Excellence, the only children’s hospital in California to ever earn this distinction, and was awarded Magnet designation, the highest honor bestowed to hospitals for nursing excellence.  Recognized for extraordinary commitment to high-quality critical care standards, CHOC’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is the first in the United States to earn the Beacon Award for Pediatric Critical Care Excellence.
