Surgical Incision Care

  • It is important to keep the sutures and incision site clean and dry for the first 3 days.

  • Do not allow the sutures to soak in water. You may wash the incision site gently with soap and water after the first 3 days. DO NOT allow site to soak or be emerged in water while bathing or showering until instructed to do so by your doctor.

  • Do not apply any lotions or ointments to the suture site, unless instructed by your doctor.

  • Do not pick or scratch the sutures or incision site. If your child complains of itching around the suture site, a Band-Aid may be placed over incision to protect it.

  • Sutures: Most incisions are closed with absorbable sutures and do not require an appointment for removal. If your child does not have absorbable sutures, you will be given information to arrange for suture removal in 7-14 days.

When to call the doctor:

  • There is redness, swelling, tenderness, or warmth around incision site.

  • Drainage that is discolored (tan, yellow, clear, or green) from the incision site.

  • A foul smelling odor

  • Fever – 38.5 degrees Celsius or 101 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • The incision starts to come apart or open. (Remember: the absorbable sutures will break apart after a few weeks; this is normal. Call if the incision begins to open!)
