The CHOC Children's Heart Institute offers one of the few pediatric cardiac catheterization programs in the Southern California. Cardiac catheterization can be used to diagnose and treat a variety of heart conditions and CHOC Children’s proudly offers two laboratories exclusively dedicated to this important form of cardiac diagnosis and treatment. Although catheterization is an invasive procedure that goes inside the body, the risks associated with it are quite low and the tests can provide doctors with important information that other tests cannot. Catheterization can also offer therapeutic treatments for patients with a number of different heart conditions, including congenital heart problems, acquired cardiac disease or dysrhythmias. Among the number of treatment options available through cardiac catheterization is the Melody® Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve that offers children with failing pulmonary valve conduits a new option for treating pulmonary their condition without open-heart surgery.
