CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL OF ORANGE COUNTY EXPANDS BREATHMOBILE® PROGRAM - IMPROVING ACCESS TO SPECIALIZED ASTHMA CARE TO UNDER INSURED CHILDREN
June 01, 2007

WHAT: Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) will unveil Orange County's newest CHOC Breathmobile®, enhancing access to comprehensive, specialized asthma care to under insured children in Orange County. The CHOC Breathmobile® is a fully equipped mobile asthma treatment unit staffed with a bilingual nurse, physician and driver. This new unit (the first launched in 2003) will expand coverage to school and community sites in South Orange County. Further expansion is planned for Westminster, Fountain Valley, Stanton, Tustin, Huntington Beach and La Habra.

WHO: Speakers include: Dr. Stanley Galant, founder of the Orange County School Asthma Program and medical director of the CHOC Breathmobile®; Francene Lifson, executive director of the Southern California Chapter of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America; and Dr. Maria Minon, vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer at CHOC. Local dignitaries and families impacted by the CHOC Breathmobile® will also be on hand.

WHEN: Tuesday, June 5th, 10 a.m. – Noon

Presentation at 10:30 a.m.

WHERE: CHOC Employee Parking Lot

Entrance on Main and CHOC Court (City of Orange)

WHY: Approximately 10 percent of school age children in Orange County have been recently diagnosed with significant bronchial asthma. Asthma is the most under diagnosed childhood disease causing more school absenteeism than any other chronic health condition. After just one year, the CHOC Breathmobile® recorded the following outcomes: ED visits decreased from 17 percent to 4 percent; hospitalization decreased from 12 percent to 3.6 percent; and school absenteeism decreased from 22 percent to 2.9 percent.

INTERVIEWS/ PHOTO OPPS: All speakers will be available for interviews and photos. In addition, families/patients who have accessed the program will also be on hand. The CHOC Breathmobile will be opened up for tours and photos.
