CHOC READING PROGRAM RECEIVES RECORD NUMBER OF BOOKS FROM BOOK DRIVE SPONSORED BY BARNES & NOBLE AND PAT & OSCAR'S
October 18, 2006

Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) today accepted 9,500 books collected in a July book drive sponsored by Barnes & Noble Booksellers and Pat & Oscar's Restaurants. This is the largest number of books ever donated to the hospital at one time, and will benefit the hospital's literacy program, which is affiliated with Reach Out & Read.

The book drive, which took place between July 1-31, provided Orange County Barnes & Noble's patrons the opportunity to donate books to CHOC. In exchange for the donations, patrons received specially stamped receipts that could be brought to any Orange County Pat & Oscar's Restaurant for a bookmark and coupon for one free kid's meal. At the end of the book drive, Barnes & Noble topped off the patrons' donations with several hundred books.

"We are so grateful to have partnered with two outstanding corporate citizens - Barnes & Noble and Pat & Oscar's, and are thrilled by the community's support of our program. As health care workers, we know first-hand how poor reading skills can negatively impact the lives of our patients. Through our award-winning literacy program, we intend to make a positive change that will have long-lasting effects on the health and well being of the children and families we serve," says Emma Course, reading program coordinator at CHOC.

CHOC's literacy program consists of modeling reading by volunteers who bring books into the clinic waiting rooms; training pediatricians in specific literacy strategies to promote books; and giving each patient a developmentally appropriate book to take home at each visit. Children grow up with at least a few interesting books at home, and parents hear about the importance of looking at books with young children.

Named one of the best children’s hospitals by U.S. News & World Report (2014-2015) and a 2013 Leapfrog Top Hospital for the highest quality of care, Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC Children's) is exclusively committed to the health and well-being of children through clinical expertise, advocacy, outreach, education and research that brings advanced treatment to pediatric patients. Affiliated with the University of California, Irvine, CHOC’s regional health care network includes two state-of-the-art hospitals in Orange and Mission Viejo, many primary and specialty care clinics, a pediatric residency program, and four clinical centers of excellence - the CHOC Children’s Heart, Neuroscience, Orthopaedic and Hyundai Cancer Institutes..

CHOC earned the Gold Level CAPE Award from the California Council of Excellence, the only children’s hospital in California to ever earn this distinction, and was awarded Magnet designation, the highest honor bestowed to hospitals for nursing excellence.  Recognized for extraordinary commitment to high-quality critical care standards, CHOC’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is the first in the United States to earn the Beacon Award for Pediatric Critical Care Excellence.
